Linlithgow was also known as Linlithgowshire, midway between the glamour of Glasgow and the elegance of Edinburgh lies West Lothian - and is where the town of Linlithgow is situated which offers a wide range of attractions. The town centre, County Buildings, the Cross Well, the Kirkgate, and Linlithgow Palace is a great place to start.

To the west, along the High Street, you will find the "Linlithgow Story" at Annet House and, at the end of the High Street in the other direction, a short walk up Station Road or Back Station Road will lead you to the Linlithgow Canal Centre. *

Linlithgow is home to a major facility owned by Sun Microsystems, one of their most important basses outside the USA and the only manufacturing facility outside the USA. Sun Microsystems are a major local employer.

The Sun Solution Centre is where businesses can go to test their systems with their own data to work out if the technology will suit their needs.

However today IBM made a bid to takeover troubled Sun Microsystems at £4.7bn and is expected to be announced this week raising questions about the deal's impact on the Scottish operations.

IBM are reported to be paying between $9 and $10 a share for Sun Microsystems, based at Santa Clara in the heart of Silicon Valley.

A takeover of Sun, which has a plant at Linlithgow, could be announced as early as tomorrow 6th April 2009. Buying Sun would give IBM a clear lead at the high end of the $45bn overall server market, which it fights over with Hewlett-Packard.

Obviously all such takeovers can have a great impact on the local communities and the town is anxious to hear about the the fate of the company.

Sun Microsystems is one of the largest suppliers of servers for the IT industry and provide much of the backend to the Internet. Sun also owns MYSQL which is a widely used database facility used to power many online applications.
